Is Roblox Safe for 8 Year Olds?

How parents can think about Roblox chat, spending, friend requests, private servers, and family rules for younger players.

Roblox can be creative and social, but it is not one single game. It is a platform of many experiences made by many creators, which means the safety question depends on chat settings, spending controls, friend rules, and which experiences your child joins.

For an 8 year old, the default family stance should be supervised play, tight communication settings, purchase approval, and a rule that new experiences are tried with a parent nearby first. The risk is usually less about the blocky graphics and more about social contact, pressure to spend, and moving conversations to other apps.

The practical goal is not to ban every risk. It is to make Roblox predictable: approved games, known friends, no secret chats, no off-platform contact, and quick reporting when something feels wrong.

Parent Checklist

  • Review privacy and communication settings before the first play session.
  • Disable or tightly control purchases and Robux spending.
  • Keep friends to children your family knows in real life unless you explicitly approve otherwise.
  • Ask your child to show you their favourite three experiences and why they like them.
  • Make a rule that nobody moves from Roblox to Discord, Snapchat, WhatsApp, or private voice chat without parent approval.

What to Say

Show me the games you like, not because you are in trouble, but because I want to understand your world.
If someone asks you to keep a secret, move apps, send a picture, or accept a gift, pause and come to me.
We can solve almost any online problem if you tell me early.
