iPhone Parental Controls Checklist

A parent-friendly setup checklist for iPhone Screen Time, app approval, downtime, communication, and content settings.

iPhone controls are powerful, but parents often miss the sequence. Set up the child account, family sharing, purchase approval, content restrictions, downtime, app limits, communication safety settings where available, and a parent passcode before the phone becomes emotionally loaded.

Controls are only one layer. A child can still encounter problems through group chats, social apps, web links, school accounts, and friends' devices. Pair settings with a short family agreement and a weekly review.

Do not make the passcode the whole safety plan. Children need to know what to do when something happens outside the settings.

Parent Checklist

  • Use a child account connected to family sharing where appropriate.
  • Set a Screen Time passcode that the child does not know.
  • Enable purchase approval and age-appropriate app restrictions.
  • Configure downtime and bedtime charging outside the bedroom.
  • Review privacy, location sharing, contacts, photos, and browser restrictions.

What to Say

Settings are the seatbelt. Our conversations are the driving lessons.
I will set up guardrails before you start using the phone, not after the first problem.
If a setting blocks something reasonable, we can review it together.
