Family Rules for ChatGPT and Homework

How to set AI homework rules that respect school policy, learning, attribution, and independent thinking.

AI can help a student brainstorm, practise, summarise, and check understanding. It can also cross the line into doing the thinking for them. The family rule should follow the school rule first, then add your own learning standard.

A useful boundary is: AI may help you understand, plan, and practise, but it cannot replace your own answer unless the teacher explicitly allows that mode. Students should be able to explain any work they submit.

Parents can reduce conflict by asking process questions instead of trying to detect every AI sentence: What did you ask? What did you change? What do you understand better now? What would you say without the tool?

Parent Checklist

  • Ask the school or teacher what AI use is allowed.
  • Write allowed uses: brainstorming, examples, quiz practice, feedback, and explanation.
  • Write banned uses: submitting copied answers, hiding AI use, or using AI during closed assessments.
  • Require the student to explain their answer out loud.
  • Keep private family, school, and friend details out of prompts.

What to Say

AI can be a tutor, but it cannot be your brain on the page.
If you cannot explain the answer, it is not ready to submit.
We follow the teacher's AI rules even when the tool makes cheating easy.
