The Parent Panic Button: What to Do First

A calm first-response framework for scary messages, bullying, image issues, stranger contact, and online threats.

When a parent sees a scary message, nude request, threat, or bullying thread, the nervous system wants to do everything at once. The better response is a short sequence: make the child safe, preserve context, stop further harm where possible, choose the right reporting path, and get support.

Not every online incident is an emergency, but some are. Immediate threats, self-harm risk, extortion, adult sexual contact, or risk of physical harm should be escalated quickly to appropriate local services.

For non-immediate incidents, the best first move is often to slow down. Do not delete everything. Do not retaliate. Do not shame the child. Gather facts and act from a plan.

Parent Checklist

  • Check immediate physical and emotional safety.
  • Preserve usernames, messages, URLs, timestamps, and screenshots where appropriate.
  • Do not forward explicit images of minors.
  • Block or restrict contact after evidence is preserved when safe.
  • Use platform reports, school channels, Netsafe or local support, and emergency services when warranted.
